Chiquita's Name Mounted

Years ago Victor Peters gave me on of the sides of Chiquita's cabin, which he had just replaced.  Chiquita was my first boat, a pretty little 23-footer with a carvel hull, full length keel, gaff rig, tan sails, etc.

Today I mounted the piece on a jarrah paneled wall in the back porth.  It took me months to figure out how to do the job by myself.  I knew from experience that working alone can often lead to a superior job because it forces one to set up the work so that it sustains itself, yielding plenty of time for do the work in a leisurely and measured way.  And so it was with this job.
Used blocks on the planks go get correct heights

Two frames with planks between and jutting out against wall

Monument to Chiquita.  Lower edge curved to follow sheer of deck.

The problem was how to hold the piece in the correct position.  Ladders would not work because they would not hold the slab of wood against the wall.  Last week two metal frames in the garage caught my eye.  They had been used for hanging magnetic tapes at the computer centre.  The photos tell the story of how I did it.  I screwed the piece to the wall using six 14g wood screws 50mm long.
