Mirror Light Is Up

Putting up the mirror light over the vanity turned out to be a bigger job than I had expected.

Without going into the lengthy details I established that both brand new neon lights from Bunnings had the same fault and I installed an LED light from Beacon Lighting.

Mounting the light was a lengthy and delicate process because we had sealed the wall without putting in an internal piece of wood between the wall studs for mounting the light.  My only option at this point was to fix an external  mounting piece between the studs.  I succeeded by using a piece of angle aluminium that I found in the garage and managing to make it work after getting around all sorts of complications and workarounds.

External Aluminium Mounting Bracked Screwed to Wall Studs
The result was good - good enough to avoid Plan B, which was to cut out a section of the wall in order to put in the internal cross piece, then patching up the wall, all hidden by the mirror anyway.  That would have worked but would have taken hours of work by Paul after he became available again in late October.

I celebrated by making a salad that I had adapted from one Paul had showed me: On a bed of shredded raw cabbage grate a carrot and a beetroot then cover with chopped up capsicum and tomato.  Pour a bit of olive oil and sprinkle with turmeric.  Top it off with a couple spoonfuls of cottage cheese.  Yummy, satisfying, and diabolically healthy.

There is progress on another front.  Yesterday morning I visited Mundaring Glass and Security armed with photographs and measurements and discussed with Simon the various options for the shower screen and vanity mirror.  Simon will visit the house at 8 AM on Friday to take his own measurements and discuss the details

At present it looks like we'll install 10mm thick piece of glass that will be fixed to the wall and hob but no other bracing and have no aluminium edging.  This will not be cheap - over $1,000 - but to me it will be well worth the money, given that they will cut the glass to fit the exact angle between the wall and hob and make the installation.

The mirror will be mounted on clips, which was my preference over the option of gluing the mirror to the wall.

Once I have a written quotation I will pay a deposit and can expect installation about a week later.

  1. Robert - liked the look of your light (as installed) and lunch. You shouldn't need to celebrate to eat a healthy meal. Eat healthy anyways :) Minor nagging aside, great you are able to overcome problems as encountered ..... Cheers Stephen
