Pad for Garbage Bins

Since the completion of the brick paving last year I've found the need to pull the garbage bins up a small embankment a weekly source of irritation, and I have finally gotten a chance to do something about it.

I had plenty of bricks and enough white sand to do the job, and the wet weather had made the heavy clay soil soft and workable, rather than hard like concrete during the summer months.

The Finished Look

At this point I have used no mortar.  I did the best I could in leveling the site then used a layer of white sound for bedding down the bricks evenly.  The  edge bricks are held firmly in position by the heavy clay rammed hard along outside perimeter.  Even so many of the bricks were wobbly until I brushed white sand into all  of the cracks, making them very firm.

In the gap between the new pad and the path is the cement used to support the edge of the path, and I did not want to take the risks in removing this. Yesterday I purchased the mortar, coloring, and Bondcrete to mortar that gap at the next opportunity, to yield a gentle ramp between the path and the pad.

I deliberately made the pad slightly above the path, partly for drainage, and partly to minimize the height of the pad's perimeter.  I filled in the void around the perimeter by creating gentle slopes of the terrain.

I will add a final photo after the mortar work has been completed.
