Fittings

I set out yesterday afternoon looking for a toilet roll holder and a guest towel ring for the vanity.

By then I had decided that the toilet roll holder would not be fixed to the glass shower partition, following a discussion about the matter with Scott at Mundaring Glass.  I had expected him to tell me about holders specifically designed for that setup but instead he seemed tentative and uncertain about the idea.  He confirmed  that drilling through the glass was out of the question and offered a solution of either two-sided adhesive tape (which he agreed probably would not last long) or a tube of strong glue market under the name T-Rex.  He mentioned that the glue and back of the holder would be seen from inside of the shower section, which sealed it for me.

My first stop was Tradelink in Midvale and there I found what I needed. It was a quiet time and I had Bill the salesman all to myself so I was able to get his advice in peace and leisure.

I got off easier than I had expected.  The costs were $22.73 for the toilet roll holder and $17.27 for the towel ring.  They are both well designed, easy to mount, and surfaced in chrome, which should resist tarnishing.

The screws supplied with the toilet roll holder were not suitable for the particle board of the vanity and thru-bolting was required, and  I managed to find thin long bolts with washers in my stocks. After figuring out how to remove the top drawer of the vanity the job was a straight forward one of keeping cool and drilling straight.

The towel holder was trickier because I had to figure out the location of a suitable wall stud.  Fortunately I had had the foresight to take a photograph of the exposed wall with the distances and stud thicknesses clearly written in black.  Using those measurements I located the most suitable stud and was bang on with the two side-by-side drill holes (phew!)

Target was the second stud from the left
