Varnish Work

I took advantage of several days of good weather with nothing urgent to do and restored the wood work next to the renovated French doors at the back of the house.
Sad Looking Wall Section and Laundry Door

I had not done any maintenance on this woodwork since putting it up in about 1980 and it was looking very sad, particularly close to the ground where the varnish was badly flaked and the wood had turned gray.
Sanded and Ready for Varnish

Finished Wall Section and Laundry Door

Fortunately Jarrah is a very tough wood and a couple of days of belt sanding brought back its smoothness and color.  Working a belt sander against a wall is not easy because one is forced to hold the sander up and press it against the wood at the same time, and it was a matter of persistence with frequent breaks.

After doing some wood filling I laid 3 coats of marine varnish.

I was pleased with the effort because I had not planned to get to this little project until 2016.
